Goodwill Industries of Greater NY and Northern NJ, Inc. (Goodwill NYNJ) has continued to place people in employment during the Covid-19 pandemic. One of its 46 programs in the New York City metropolitan region, Jobs-Plus in The Bronx has placed more than 20 NYCHA residents in Covid-19 related positions like warehousing, maintenance, Healthcare and Security.
In response to the growing unemployment and small business collapse in New York City as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Goodwill Industries of Greater NY and Northern NJ, Inc. (Goodwill NYNJ) joined over 80 leaders from the private and human services sectors to partnered as the NY Workforce Recovery Strategy Group to develop a recovery plan centered on small businesses and workforce development for displaced workers and marginalized communities.
Starting June 15th 2020, Goodwill NYNJ started our phased reopening of our store fleet. Stores will reopen with enhanced safety guidelines for shoppers, donors and employees including social distancing in stores, required face covering, one way shopping in aisles and contactless donations.
Starting May 19, three New Jersey Goodwill NYNJ stores will open for contactless donation drop-offs Tuesdays – Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Stores will not be open for shopping. Signage at the locations will indicate how to safely make a contactless donation.

All 32 of our Goodwill stores in the New York City metropolitan region, including the 10 Northern NJ Counties, have temporarily closed for 2 weeks due to the executive orders from the NY and NJ Governors. The closure has left us without critical funding to operate our programs removing barriers to employment for the most vulnerable residents of our communities and to help them to prepare for jobs.
Goodwill Industries® of Greater NY and Northern NJ will temporarily close its 32 thrift stores while continuing to pay staff, offer remote services for behavioral health, people with development disabilities and those looking for work in response to the latest developments of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) effective today.
