Goodwill Industries of Greater NY and Northern NJ (Goodwill NYNJ) will end an important chapter in its history as the nonprofit organization closes its Astoria headquarters and moves to a new facility in downtown Brooklyn. Effective May 1, 2021, the official address of Goodwill NYNJ will be 25 Elm Place, 3rd Floor, Brooklyn, NY 11201.
Goodwill NYNJ will close all operations in this Astoria facility, including collection of in-kind donations. We’d appreciate if you could drop your donations of clothing and other household goods at our nearest location, the Goodwill outlet located at 47-47 Van Dam Street; Long Island City, NY 11101.
Preserving the affordability of Goodwill Terrace was important to our values, so on December 2019, Goodwill NYNJ closed on the sale of the Goodwill Terrace building to the Rose Affordable Housing Preservation Fund IV, L.P., an affiliate of Jonathan Rose Companies (JRC), a reputable affordable housing organization with a demonstrated record of high-quality building management and committed to ensuring affordability for years to come and to making necessary capital upgrades to the building. The adjacent building was also sold in 2020.
More than 45 years ago, Goodwill NYNJ chose to rent its headquarters in Astoria, Queens, at the basement of Goodwill Terrace, a building with 200 barrier-free apartments, and operate an adjacent separate warehouse facility. During this important chapter, we launched training and employment services for people with all types of disabilities, behavioral services for individuals with mental illness, and workforce development services for individuals applying or receiving public assistance. Locally in Astoria, we launched youth and community development services, a Family Learning Center with an after-school program, adult learning training for parents seeking jobs, and launched the Two Coves Community Board to collaborate with local Astoria elected officials, business leaders, other nonprofit partners, the NYPD, and others to implement services that would address the needs of local families.
As we begin a new chapter this May, we are proud of the legacy of affordable housing we are leaving behind in Astoria for nearly 300 people, including families and single individuals, living at the Goodwill Terrace apartments. Our Queens programs will stay in Queens to provide uninterrupted service to the program participants we are currently servicing and we are working to ensure a smooth transition to the new locations.
